What Is a Two-Wheeler RC Book? A two-wheeler RC book (Registration Certificate) is the official document issued by your Regional Transport Office (RTO) that proves your bike or scooter is legally registered in your name. Without it, you cannot legally ride your two-wheeler on Indian public roads.
What is a two-wheeler RC book?
The RC book is issued under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, once you register a new two-wheeler with the RTO. It confirms two things: that the vehicle is officially recorded with the government, and that you are its registered owner.
Today it comes in two formats:
- Smart card RC – a laminated plastic card, similar in size to a debit card.

What information does the RC book contain?
Every RC book carries a fixed set of details about your vehicle and you as the owner:
- Registration number and date of registration

- Fuel type (petrol, electric, CNG)
- Registered RTO and state

Why is the RC book important?

How long is an RC book valid?
A private two-wheeler’s RC is valid for 15 years from the date of issue. After that, you renew it at the RTO for another 5 years at a time, for as long as the vehicle stays roadworthy.
