The 10 most important monsoon bike checks are tyres, brakes, chain, battery, wiring, lights, horn, air filter, engine oil and the silencer. Doing them before the first heavy rain prevents most rainy-season breakdowns, skids and no-start problems.

Toggle10 Monsoon Bike Care Checks
- Tyre tread and pressure: worn tyres aquaplane on wet roads. Replace them if the tread is close to the wear indicator. Tyre replacement at home takes under an hour.
- Brakes: wet brakes lose grip. Check shoe and pad thickness, and brake fluid on disc brakes.
- Chain cleaning and lubrication: rain washes lube away and causes rust. Hero’s schedule already asks for chain care every 2,000 km (source); in the monsoon, do it more often. Noisy chain? See why a bike chain rattles or squeaks.
- Battery and terminals: damp weather corrodes terminals. Clean them and test the battery. Our battery health guide explains how.
- Wiring and connectors: look for cracked insulation and loose connectors near the headlight and under the seat.
- Headlight, tail light and indicators: visibility drops in rain; replace weak bulbs.
- Horn: water can kill a weak horn when you need it most.
- Air filter: a soaked or clogged filter cuts power and mileage.
- Engine oil: top up or change if due, so the engine is protected in slow, wet traffic.
- Silencer and spark plug: water in the exhaust or a wet plug causes starting trouble.
Monsoon Riding Tips
- Avoid riding through water deeper than the silencer outlet.
- Brake gently and earlier than usual.
- Park under cover and use a breathable bike cover.
- Dry and lubricate the chain after riding in heavy rain.
If your bike will not start after rain, follow our guide on bike not starting after rain or waterlogging.

Which Cities Need Extra Monsoon Care?
Cities with long or heavy monsoons, like Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai (northeast monsoon) and Dehradun, see the most chain rust and electrical faults.
How to Clean and Lubricate Your Chain in the Monsoon
- Put the bike on its main stand so the rear wheel turns freely.
- Wipe off mud and old grease with a cloth; use a chain cleaner or kerosene sparingly on a brush.
- Let the chain dry fully. Lubricant does not stick to a wet chain.
- Apply chain lube to the inner side of the chain while turning the wheel slowly.
- Wait 10–15 minutes, then wipe off the extra so it does not collect dirt.
If the chain is visibly rusty, has tight spots or the sprocket teeth look hooked, it is time for a chain sprocket kit rather than more lube.
Protecting the Electrics from Water
Most monsoon breakdowns are electrical, not mechanical. Water gets into loose connectors, the spark plug cap and the battery terminals. Ask your mechanic to check and tighten connectors behind the headlight and under the seat, replace a cracked spark plug cap, and apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly on battery terminals to slow corrosion. If the starter feels weak on damp mornings, get the battery tested before it fails completely.
Safe Riding in Heavy Rain
- Increase your following distance. Stopping distances on wet roads are much longer.
- Avoid painted lines, metal covers and oil patches. They are the most slippery surfaces in rain.
- Stay out of deep water. If you cannot see the road surface, you cannot see potholes.
- Keep revs steady in shallow water. This keeps water from entering the exhaust.
- Test your brakes after riding through water. A few gentle presses dry the pads or shoes.
- Wear reflective or bright rain gear. Visibility drops sharply in heavy rain.
After the Monsoon: What to Check
When the rains end, book a post-monsoon service. Chains, brake parts, wheel bearings and wiring take the most damage over the season. A check at this point catches rust and worn parts before they turn into bigger repairs. See our bike service interval chart to plan the next service.
Monsoon Checklist at a Glance
| Check | Why it matters in rain | Fix if needed |
|---|---|---|
| Tyres | Worn tread aquaplanes | Replace tyres |
| Brakes | Wet brakes lose grip | Adjust or replace pads/shoes |
| Chain | Rain washes lube away | Clean and lubricate |
| Battery | Damp corrodes terminals | Clean, test, replace if weak |
| Wiring | Water causes shorts | Tighten and seal connectors |
| Lights and horn | Visibility drops | Replace bulbs, fix horn |
| Air filter | Soaked filter cuts power | Clean or replace |
| Engine oil | Protects in slow wet traffic | Top up or change |
| Silencer | Water causes starting trouble | Drain and dry |
| Spark plug | Moisture stops the spark | Clean or replace |
Doing all ten checks together takes less than an hour during a doorstep periodic service, and it costs far less than a breakdown in the middle of a downpour.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I service my bike before the monsoon?
About 2–4 weeks before the rains start, so worn tyres, brake parts or a weak battery can be replaced in time.
How often should I lubricate the chain in the rainy season?
Every 300–500 km, or after any ride in heavy rain.
Should I change engine oil before the monsoon?
If it is due within the next 1,000 km, yes. Fresh oil protects the engine in slow wet traffic.
Can monsoon checks be done at home?
Yes. A doorstep periodic service covers all 10 checks.
Is it safe to wash my bike with high pressure water after the rain?
Use low pressure around the electricals, the chain and wheel bearings. High pressure can push water into connectors and bearings.
Should I use a bike cover in the monsoon?
Yes, a breathable cover keeps rain off the seat, wiring and battery. Avoid covering a wet bike tightly for days, as trapped moisture causes rust.
