HSRP Number Plate for Bikes

An HSRP (High Security Registration Plate) is a tamper-proof aluminium number plate that is mandatory for every two-wheeler in India under Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. Bikes registered on or after 1 April 2019 already come with HSRP fitted by the dealer; bikes registered before that date must get HSRP fitted by booking online at the SIAM HSRP portal or BookMyHSRP. An HSRP for a two-wheeler costs about ₹400–₹550 (₹531 in Maharashtra), and riding without one can attract a fine of ₹500–₹1,000 in most states that are enforcing it.

What Is an HSRP Number Plate?

An HSRP number plate is a government-standardised registration plate made of aluminium with built-in security features that make it hard to forge, swap or reuse. It is linked to your vehicle’s record in the VAHAN database, so police and RTOs can verify it instantly.

Security features of an HSRP

  1. Chromium-based hologram of the Ashoka Chakra in blue, hot-stamped on the top-left corner.
  2. Unique 10-digit laser-etched PIN (Permanent Identification Number) on the bottom-left, linked to your bike’s chassis and engine number.
  3. “IND” inscription in blue, next to the hologram.
  4. Hot-stamped registration number in a standard font, with a reflective film.
  5. Non-removable, non-reusable snap locks — the plate can’t be removed without breaking the lock, so it can’t be moved to another vehicle.
  6. Aluminium base that resists weathering and rust.

Why HSRP is mandatory

HSRP helps prevent vehicle theft, fake or duplicate number plates, and the use of vehicles in crimes. Because the laser PIN is linked to the bike’s chassis and engine number, a stolen bike with swapped plates can be identified quickly.

Does My Bike Need an HSRP?

Your bike needs an HSRP if it was registered before 1 April 2019 and still has an ordinary number plate. Check your registration date on your two-wheeler RC book.

Your BikeDo You Need to Book HSRP?
Registered on or after 1 April 2019No — HSRP was fitted at the dealership
Registered before 1 April 2019, ordinary plateYes
Has a “fancy”, “smart” or look-alike plate with a hologram stickerYes — look-alike plates are not valid HSRP
HSRP damaged, lost or stolenYes — apply for a replacement HSRP
Electric two-wheeler (registered)Yes — it gets an HSRP with a green background

Most of the best-selling two-wheelers in India from before 2019 — Splendor, Activa, Pulsar, Apache, Classic 350 — fall in the “must book” category if they still carry old plates.

How Much Does an HSRP Cost for a Bike?

An HSRP for a two-wheeler costs about ₹400–₹550 for a set of front and rear plates, including the snap locks and GST. Prices are fixed by each state, so the exact amount depends on where your bike is registered.

Vehicle TypeApprox. HSRP Cost (2026)
Two-wheeler (bike / scooter)₹400–₹550 (₹531 in Maharashtra)
Three-wheeler₹500–₹650 (₹590 in Maharashtra)
Four-wheeler₹800–₹1,200 + colour sticker (four-wheelers only)

Home fitment: Many states allow doorstep fitment for an extra charge (usually ₹100–₹300 for two-wheelers). Book only through official portals — agents charging ₹1,000+ for a two-wheeler HSRP are overcharging.

How to Book an HSRP for a Bike Online (Step-by-Step)

You can book an HSRP for a two-wheeler online in about 10 minutes through the SIAM portal or BookMyHSRP. The process is the same across most states; the portal redirects you to the HSRP vendor authorised for your bike’s manufacturer.

  1. Keep your RC handy — you need the registration number, chassis number and engine number from your RC book.
  2. Open the official portal — go to siam.in and click “Book HSRP”, or go directly to bookmyhsrp.com.
  3. Select your vehicle category — choose “Two Wheeler” and the fuel type (petrol / electric).
  4. Select your bike’s manufacturer — e.g., Hero, Honda, Bajaj, TVS, Royal Enfield. The portal redirects you to that brand’s authorised HSRP vendor.
  5. Enter vehicle details — registration number, chassis number (last 5 digits) and engine number (last 5 digits), exactly as printed on the RC.
  6. Verify with OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  7. Choose fitment type — dealer/fitment centre or home fitment (where available).
  8. Pick an appointment date and time slot.
  9. Pay online via UPI, card or net banking and download the receipt.
  10. Get the plates fitted — carry the booking receipt and RC. The fitter removes the old plates and fixes the HSRP with snap locks; the laser PIN is updated to the VAHAN database.

How to check HSRP booking status

Return to the same portal you booked on, select “Track Order” or “Order Status”, and enter your order ID or registration number. The status shows whether plates are manufactured, dispatched, or ready for fitment.

Common booking mistakes to avoid

  1. Typing the chassis or engine number wrong — even one character mismatch rejects the order. Copy exactly from the RC.
  2. Booking on unofficial look-alike websites — always start from siam.in or bookmyhsrp.com.
  3. Mobile number not linked to RC — update your mobile number on the Parivahan portal first, or OTP verification fails.
  4. Ignoring the appointment — in some states, a valid appointment receipt is accepted as proof during enforcement checks only until the fitment date.

HSRP Deadlines by State (Status as of October 2026)

HSRP deadlines for old vehicles are set by each state government, and most states have extended them several times. The table below shows the status in states where BikeProMech operates; always confirm the current rule on your state transport department website.

StateKey BikeProMech CityHSRP Status for Pre-2019 Two-WheelersReported Fine
MaharashtraPuneDeadline was 30 June 2026 (extended from 31 Dec 2025); enforcement drives started 1 July 2026Up to ₹1,000
KarnatakaBangaloreMandatory; final extended deadline of 31 January 2025 has passed₹500 first offence, ₹1,000 repeat (as stated by the transport department)
TelanganaHyderabadMade mandatory in April 2025; deadline was 30 September 2025; traffic police directed to book cases after thatAs per MV Act provisions
Tamil NaduChennai, CoimbatoreCheck the TN Transport Department for the current notificationVaries
HaryanaGurgaonHSRP mandatory; check Haryana Transport for current enforcementVaries

Important: States regularly extend, revise or restart HSRP enforcement drives. If a deadline in your state has passed, book immediately — in Maharashtra, for example, a valid appointment was treated as compliance during the extended window, but riding with no HSRP and no booking invites a challan.

What Is the Fine for Riding a Bike Without HSRP?

Riding a two-wheeler without HSRP, where your state has made it mandatory, is an offence under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The fine collected on the road is set by each state.

SituationTypical Penalty
No HSRP after state deadline (Maharashtra)Up to ₹1,000
No HSRP, first offence (Karnataka)₹500
No HSRP, repeat offence (Karnataka)₹1,000
Fake, look-alike or “smart” plate posing as HSRPChallan plus mandatory replacement; can attract stricter action
Tampered or swapped HSRPSerious offence — HSRP is linked to chassis and engine numbers

Other problems you can face without HSRP

  1. RTO services may be blocked — some states hold back RC transfer, address change, hypothecation removal and duplicate RC until HSRP is fitted.
  2. Insurance and claim friction — insurers match your plate to the RC and VAHAN record during claims. Compare cover in this guide to the best bike insurance plans in India and this list of bike insurance companies in India.
  3. Resale delays — buyers and dealers increasingly refuse pre-2019 bikes without HSRP because RC transfer gets stuck.

HSRP Checklist: Keep All Your Bike Documents in Order

A pre-2019 bike that needs HSRP usually also needs other paperwork checked. Use this list while you book:

  1. RC — confirm details match your bike; read what a two-wheeler RC book is.
  2. Insurance — renew before expiry; compare the best bike insurance plans in India.
  3. PUC certificate — required by law and often by insurers.
  4. HSRP — book on siam.in or bookmyhsrp.com.
  5. Mechanical condition — an older bike riding to a fitment centre should be road-safe. Run through this quick bike service checklist.

Is Your Pre-2019 Bike Due for a Service Too?

Bikes old enough to need HSRP are usually 7+ years old and often overdue for maintenance. Before you ride to an HSRP fitment centre, check for these common issues on older bikes:

  1. Engine oil — see how to know if your bike needs an oil change and pick the right grade from the best engine oil for bikes. Royal Enfield owners can follow the Classic 350 engine oil change interval.
  2. Battery — older batteries fail first; use this DIY bike battery health check guide.
  3. Starting problems — see bike not starting: common causes and fixes.
  4. Clutch wear — check the signs your bike clutch plate is worn out.
  5. Fuelling and pickup — learn why a throttle body is used in a motorcycle engine.
  6. Mileage drop — scooter owners can use these tips on how to increase scooty mileage in city traffic.
  7. Major engine work — check the bike engine repair cost in India before approving big repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HSRP mandatory for bikes in India?

Yes. HSRP is mandatory for all two-wheelers under Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. Bikes registered on or after 1 April 2019 already have it; older bikes must get it fitted by the deadline set by their state.

How much does HSRP cost for a two-wheeler?

About ₹400–₹550 for front and rear plates, depending on the state. In Maharashtra, the fixed price for a two-wheeler is ₹531 including GST and snap lock.

Do bikes need a colour-coded sticker with HSRP?

No. The colour-coded third registration sticker (showing fuel type) applies to four-wheelers. Two-wheelers only need the front and rear HSRP plates.

How do I book HSRP for my bike online?

Visit siam.in and click “Book HSRP” or go to bookmyhsrp.com, select two-wheeler and your bike’s brand, enter registration, chassis and engine numbers, verify with OTP, pick a fitment slot and pay online.

What is the fine for not having HSRP on a bike?

It varies by state. Maharashtra levies up to ₹1,000 from 1 July 2026; Karnataka’s transport department has stated ₹500 for a first offence and ₹1,000 for a repeat offence.

Is my “smart” number plate with a hologram sticker valid?

No. Look-alike or “smart” plates with hologram stickers are not HSRP. Only plates fitted by an authorised vendor with a laser-etched PIN linked to VAHAN are valid.

Can I fit HSRP myself?

No. HSRP must be fitted by the authorised vendor or fitment centre using non-reusable snap locks, so the PIN can be updated in the VAHAN database.

What if my HSRP gets damaged or stolen?

Apply for a replacement HSRP through the same booking portal or your state’s HSRP portal. For a stolen plate, file a police complaint first and keep a copy.

Do I need HSRP to sell my old bike?

In many states, yes. RTOs can hold back RC transfer for pre-2019 vehicles without HSRP, so fit it before listing the bike for sale.
